The differences in these contouring maps will blow your mind.
Picture
Contouring and highlighting are like chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream: best together. First, let's review these makeup techniques before getting into the mind-blowing contouring maps that follow.

Contouring is when you use a matte (read: not shimmery) powder, cream, or pencil product that's two shades darker than your skin tone to shade areas you'd like to define or reshape, like your nose, forehead, chin, and cheekbones.

Highlighting
(or strobing, Try LIGHT IN A STICK)
offsets contouring by accentuating areas of your face with light concealer or highlighter. To properly highlight or strobe, use a concealer that's two shades lighter than your skin tone or a highlighter that flatters your complexion to emphasize the areas of your face that naturally catch the light.

1. Diamond Shape Face

Picture
How to tell if your face is shaped like a diamond:

  • Your hairline is more narrow than your cheeks.
  • Your chin is slightly pointed.
  • Your face is longer than it is wide.
Where you should contour:
Try Sculpt In A Stick
  • The area below your cheekbones starting from your ears and ending in the middle of your cheeks.
Where you should highlight:
Try Light in a Stick
  • Under your eyes in an upside-down triangle shape and along your brow bone to brighten your eyes.
  • In the middle of your forehead and the middle of your chin to help broaden these naturally narrow areas.

2. Heart Shape Face

How to tell if your face is shaped like a heart:

  • Along the sides of your forehead and temples to create balance between the wider upper half of your face and the more narrow lower half.
  • The area below your cheekbones starting from your ears and ending in the middle of your cheeks.
  • The small area right below your chin to soften the point.
Where you should highlight:
Try Light in a Stick
  • Under your eyes in an upside-down triangle shape, which brightens your eyes.
  • In the middle of your forehead and the middle of your chin to help broaden these naturally narrow areas.

3. Oblong Face Shape

  • Your face is almost twice as long as it is wide.

The Genius Reason Why You Need to Use Orange and Green Concealers

It's the trick to covering any blemish.

If you've ever tried covering a bright red pimple with skin-colored foundation and cried a little inside because the redness still peeped through, chances are it's because you're not correcting the color first.

Using orange and green concealers might sound crazy, but the science behind it actually makes a lot of sense. Complementary colors (what you learned about in your third grade art class and never thought of again) are colors that fall on opposite sides of the color wheel and cancel each other out when used together. For example, if you have a red pimple, use a green concealer tone down the redness.

Picture
Beauty vlogger and makeup artist Heidi Hamoud uses this old-school color theory to correct areas of her skin for a completely even skin tone, and the results are amazing. Here's how she does it:

1. Start with a clean, moisturized face.

Picture
Make sure your skin is really hydrated before applying thick makeup so the product doesn't settle in your fine lines and creases. Try Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream.

2. Use complementary concealers to correct an uneven skin tone.

Picture
Heidi used an orange shade to combat bluish under-eye circles and green concealer to cancel out some of the redness on her cheeks. Try  Secret Concealer by Laura Mercier for your orange under-eye shade, and the Camouflage Cream Pot by Make Up For Ever for the green.

3. Apply your foundation and concealer on top.

Picture
Use foundation and concealer that match your skin tone this time. Apply your foundation all over in a patting motion to evenly distribute the product without removing the colored concealer underneath. Finish by applying your concealer in the shape of an upside-down triangle underneath your eyes to brighten the area.

4. Finish with your normal makeup routine.
